I have always loved horses, for as long as I remember.
I was born and raised in Norfolk in the UK, to a 'non-horsey' family and I spent many days of my childhood cycling around the neighbourhood to visit fields of horses, to pick them grass and hang over the fence, dreaming that one day I would have my own horse, a perfect partner.
I had my first riding lesson aged 11 and spent many years helping out at my local riding stables, just to be close to horses, still dreaming of the day I would have my own pony.
I got my first horse when I was 17, Velvet, and muddled through several years while I completed my A levels, went to university to achieve BSc (Hons) Equine Science and subsequently work as an Equine Nutritionist.
Prior to discovering natural horsemanship, Velvet and I had several problems that we worked through (napping, rearing, refusing to jump, difficult to load) and with persistence we very slowly progressed towards resolving some of these issues, although only on the surface. I thought we had a good relationship ? after all we were successfully competing in affiliated dressage competitions and representing our local Riding Club at Area and National level.
I discovered Parelli Natural Horsemanship in 2001 but it wasn't until 2004 that I started to realize how much it had to offer me. Suddenly things started to make sense and I was able to start to understand Velvet's behaviours that previously had been a source of frustration for me. When I realised that all his undesirable behaviours were just feedback on our relationship, I was hooked and decided that natural horsemanship was what I had been looking for. The transition from 'normal' to 'natural' has not always been easy, but natural horsemanship continues to be the most rewarding thing I have ever done.
I passed my Level 3 in 2007 and attended the 10 week Instructor university in the summer of 2008 at the Colorado Parelli centre, during which time I was awarded my 1* for instructing. In April 2009 I was awarded my 2* as a Licensed Parelli instructor.
In 2009 I spent 8 weeks at the UK Parelli centre, supporting the UK Faculty and assisting with teaching the new format courses as well as studying to further my own horsemanship journey. I also travelled to the Southern Hemishere to teach as part of the faculty at the Australian Ranch near Sydney.
In 2010, I graduated Level 4 in all four savvys and I spent a month teaching at Stoneleigh Park. I participated in the UK Demo team at the British Open Showjumping Championships and The Festival of the Horse. In addition I spent 4 weeks as part of the Mastery Programme at the Parelli Centre in Florida with Pat, as part of my instructor and horsemanship development.
In spring of 2011 I spent 2 months in Florida as an Intern in the Mastery Programme, and teaching on the Fast Track and during this time was awarded my 3rd star for instructing! Following my return the the UK I joined the team at Stoneleigh Park and helped to organise the Parelli Celebration at the NEC Birmingham - where Bertie and I were part of the demo team.
Following a Summer spending 7 months based at the UK Parelli Centre at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire, I am now based on the Shropshire/Worcestershire border and regularly travel around the UK to teach freelance, lessons, workshops and clinics, teaching Online, Freestyle & Liberty Levels 1 - 4 of the Parelli Programme.
In January 2012 I spent 4 weeks directly learning with Linda - developing my own horsmanship and learning more about The Game of Contact.
In May 2013 I returned to the Australian Parelli centre near Sydney for 3 weeks of studying with 5* Rob McAuliffe and 4* Berin MacFarlaine on the subject of Colt Starting – developing young horses for their first rides under saddle. I chose to study this subject to invest in my own horsemanship, and to further develop my knowledge and skills to be able to pass on to the students I teach.
I am proud to be part of the movement to help improve the level of horsemanship worldwide and my aim is to help individuals to live their dream, whatever it may be.......
